Day 4: Lunch and a Vineyard Tour

Sunday, April 14 started with a wonderful lunch prepared by Julien. Megan and Julien’s friend, Isabelle, joined us. Isabelle is a high school English teacher at a private Catholic school. She just returned from taking her students on a trip to London. We started with oysters and duck pate and then had a beautiful salad with smoked duck, a plate of cheeses and of course wine.

We followed our lunch with a trip to Chateau la Croix, a vineyard in Langon. The owner Cedric Espagnet showed us around. He explained the vineyard had been in his family for over 80 years. Originally it was a farm where they raised cows, pigs, vegetables and tobacco. He showed us the vines some of which are over 50 years old. They recently had a cold spell and he showed us how some of the leaves had been damaged. He explained about grafting and when you needed to replace a vine it was 2 euro. Then it would take two years to produce fruit.

Cedric showed Scott how the vines grow.

We then went inside to see how the wine is bottled, how the labels go and and of course to taste some of the wine.
