Day 22: Discovering Rue Minnesota, Finding Chateau Minnesota and Cooking a Farewell Dinner

This was our last full day in Bordeaux. We were feeling nostalgic. The time had gone by very fast. I volunteered to cook a chicken dinner with my lemon pasta for the family. Lots to do. Besides grocery shopping we had to return the car in the afternoon. We decided to visit Podensac and try to find Chateau Minnesota. Julien made a reservation for us at Chez Charlotte for noon. It turns out we were happy he did. It was a very busy place.

The city of Podensac is located on the left bank of the Garonne. The history of the town is very old dating from 8000 BC. This is based on finding perforated axes and other archeological findings.

In the 13th century, Bertrand de Podensac is the lord of Podensac. He is the ally of Henry III, King of England. Bertrand de Podensac is authorized by him to build a strong house on his land.

In September 1898, Mr. René Jasseau Mayor of Podensac, informed the Commission of Historical Monuments of Bordeaux that a mosaic was discovered during development of the Place des Halles work. It was a Gallo-Roman mosaic, composed of eight medallions, possibly with a central character, framed by a carved frieze. Finesse and harmony of the whole, are used to assign this work to the period of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius in the 2nd century, a lush period of Roman Gaul.

We arrived early walked around and discovered an interesting street sign.

At lunch we learned that this regiment had been stationed in Podensac during WWI. The Division arrived in France in October 1918, but it was too late for the division to be sent to the front, as the end of hostilities was near, an armistice being signed the following month. On November 11th each year they have a celebration and display both the American and French flags. Over the years several military men have visited for the ceremony.

We had a lovely lunch. I ordered the entre and plat and Scott ordered the entre, plat and dessert.

Right before Scott got his dessert our waiter came out to talk to him. He said the chef was concerned that Scott had not eaten all of his chicken and he wondered what was wrong. Scott assured him everything was great but that he was very full, however, he was not too full to have the dessert! It was very funny.

Then we went to find Chateau Minnesota. We had seen a sign when we were walking so off we went. After we found it we Googled it and we could never quite figure out what they did.

On our drive back we stopped at a stand to get lettuce, asparagus and strawberries. While I was getting the chicken and wine Scott went to get gas before we returned the car.

Getting gas was not that straight forward. He drove across the road to the gas station and then he ended up in the McDonalds drive through!!! Of course there was no where to turn around so up he went to the window. The young girl asked him what he wanted in French and he just shrugged and help up his hand and said nothing! I am sure she thought “Those crazy Americans”!!!

I made my citrus chicken (lemons and herbs under the skin) over onions, lemons and herbs. I made my lemon pasta (a favorite of our grandkids) with a salad and asparagus. Everyone enjoyed it.

We ate and toasted to our stay and the friendship we had developed. Tomorrow we would be off to Langon and our train to Bordeaux that would take us to Paris.
