War Memorials

Scott and I went to Bruges Belgium five years ago with the intention of learning more about WWI. We took a day tour with Quasimodo Tours which was a guided tour to the WWI battlefields and memorials in and around Ypers. We saw the battlefields and cemeteries, both allies and German. It was very moving. What a sad waste of lives. We also recently had seen the movie “They Shall Not Grow Old” that Peter Jackson made about WWI. It was moving as well.

When we went to all of the little villages we noted that each village had a war memorial and almost all of the names were from the fallen in WWI. Each village had many names mentioned. In some cases it was 10, 15, 30 or more names. And these were small villages. In the town of Langon, near where we stayed, there were about 80 names mentioned. In 1921 their population was 4,588. They lost about 6% of their population during the years of WWI (1914 to 1918). France lost 1,357,800 men or 4.29% tp 4.39% of their population.

Below are some of the memorials.
