Day 21: May Day, Making Jam and Family Time

Wednesday, May 1st and all of France was shut down!!! Who knew? May 1st is Labour Day and all workers must all legally be given a paid day off. Pretty much everything is closed from food stores, retail shops, many restaurants, public transportation in many cities and museums including the Louvre.

So, you might ask, what should we do? Well, make strawberry jam of course! Isabelle brought over some very wonderful strawberries. If I haven’t said so before, France has the most wonderful strawberries. They are narrow instead of round and have the most wonderful flavor. I bought them in the market several times. I suppose that is the main reason they are so sweet and good. Anyway we all helped de-stem the berries, cut them and wash the jars. Julien added his special touch. He put some lime zest and lime juice in the berries while they cooked. It added a wonderful flavor.

It was a beautiful day and since Julien and Megan had never seen the oyster fossils at Sainte-Croix-du-Mont we decided to drive over and see them and if that really special restaurant was open for lunch. See Day 11 for more information about this area and the oyster fossils. We packed up the kids and off we went.

It was an absolutely beautiful day. Scott and Julien and the boys decided to get their “pictures” taken. Then Scott went to checked out whether the restaurant was open.

They usually serve oysters but they had a large party the night before and the oysters were all gone. So they improvised with an Asian menu of chicken satay, egg rolls, fried wontons, and cheese puffs. Our lunch was great, the wine was good but the company was even better!

Cooking up a storm

Then we walked up the hill to finally visit the church that we had not seen on our last visit.

Then it was time to head home. A beautiful day.

Scott and I drove home separately and I wanted to get some pictures of all the vines. A picture cannot capture the beauty of all these vines. They are everywhere. It is breathtaking. So beautiful!

After Fynn woke up from his nap he and Sawyer got to play with Julien. I am not sure who had more fun!

  1. So many vines, so many wines, so little time to enjoy them all! Looks amazing, and I like the unique vineyard sign… perhaps Scott could build that into the steep slope in your front yard?
